Raven tricks aren’t always negative You can also credit him with those fortunate coincidences, those serendipities of life which seem to give our efforts a symbolic seal of approval. Cover and raven artist, Laila Campbell, was such a serendipity. Barb had loved her imagery because it exalted life through colour, form and movement. Learning of her interest in the Trickster, Laila explained her own raven link through her mother who was adopted into the Raven Clan of the Haida First Nations in the Queen Charlotte Islands. Laila and Barb were therefore convinced that their collaboration on this book was intended.
Laila M. Campbell, daughter of internationally recognized painter Minn Sjolseth, has lived in several British Columbia communities. Growing up in Vancouver, she attended the Vancouver School of Art. During her later residencies in other locations within the province, her works were often selected for shows.
Laila settled in Penticton in 1993 where she finds inspiration and fulfillment in the many moods of the Okanagan landscape, and her paintings remain popular choices for exhibitions. Her major retrospective, Dream Passages, was presented by the Penticton and Vernon art galleries.
Laila’s work has appeared in two books, The Garnet Fire and Beauty Is, and her art decorates the covers of several Okanagan tourism publications. She was the feature artist for the 2001 Meadowlark Festival. Montreal’s Groupe Pierre Belvedere Inc. chose three of her winter themes for its seasonal greeting card collection
Laila explores the play between dreams and reality in a style that is both colourful and lyrical. Although her swirling dancers and curious wildlife may at first appear whimsical, they expose universal truths about the living experience.
Laila’s paintings are exhibited at the Lloyd Gallery in Penticton, the Evans Gallery in Kelowna, and Gallery Rufus in Oakville, Ontario. They also hang in many Canadian and international collections.
Laila's husband, Alan Campbell took the above photo.
