ILLUSTRATOR FOR RAVEN TRICKS
ARTIST LEE CLAREMONT
Raven Wears Red Robe in Iroqois Border Pattern
About the Artist
Synchronicity introduced Barb Shave to the artist, Lee Claremont. Barb had just completed the “Raven Tricks” article when she saw Lee's Raven Wears Red Robe with Iroquois Border Pattern among a display of First Nations art works. Lee’s colourful painting depicted Barb's raven! When Lee read Barb's raven article, she concluded, “And you wrote about mine!”
The two consequently felt called upon to collaborate in the production of this book, and Barb settled upon the title Raven Tricks: It’s All Wrong, Yet It’s All Right! She is grateful for Lee’s kindred spirit and for the privilege of replicating her gleeful raven upon the cover of her book.
Lee was born in Woodstock, Ontario, of Mohawk and Irish ancestry. She is a member of the Grand River Iroquois Six Nations in Oshweken, Ontario. Lee now resides in Kelowna, British Columbia.
She is well known for her vibrant paintings which express an eclectic perception of nature, people and spirituality. She has won many awards and recognitions for her work. Most recently she won an Angel Award for the largest individual contribution in the creative arts in the Okanagan Valley. Collections of Lee's paintings can be found in Europe, the Orient and North America.
“I have always admired the power and beauty of Northwest Coast art and especially the button blankets. My Raven is wearing his red robe with an Iroquois border pattern which brings together the pride and beauty of two powerful nations.”
